There are around 150
wholesalers/suppliers in Kathmandu who regularly bring frames in volumes from
China. The hub from frames in China lies at Guangzhou. Some of the
manufacturers are Guangzhou optical manufacturers and wholesalers, Guangzhou
Ding Sheng Trading, Guangzhou Sara Trading, etc.
The wholesalers from
Kathmandu go to Guangzhou and ask the manufacturers for the desired designs and
quality of frames under certain price range. The deal is fixed and
manufacturers will deliver their products in a container in a promised time at
the border. The products should be so ordered so that they fill a whole
container. It takes a few weeks to months from the date of placing order to the
arrival of goods at the border. The wholesalers at Kathmandu delegate task of
custom clearance and goods delivery up to their Kathmandu warehouse to a
transport agent whereby they charge ~ NPR 250K for each container.
Mostly preferred frames
in Nepalese market are plastic frames. They have mainly 3 varieties: normal
plastic frames, TR and Acetate. Each plastic frame in a particular design has
around 10-12 colors to choose from. A single design of metal frames have around
3-4 colors or varieties.
They choose a few
frames from a particular design range and bring on to showcasing in their
wholesale outlets. All these outlets are located in New Road area (RB Complex,
Bishal Bazar, Suraj Arcade) and China Town. These are the outlets which supply
frames across Nepal. Or other wholesalers buy frames from them and sell to the retailers.
Any eye hospital will
be publishing the standing list of possible vendors annually at the start of a
fiscal year and the purchases will be made directly negotiating from those
listed vendors if the purchase amount is less than certain amount mentioned in
their policy (GoN limit is NPR 150K). If the eye hospital does not have their
own finance/procurement policy, they follow the procurement guidelines of GoN.
And for up to NPR 1 million, the eye hospital will invite
sealed quotations, and the purchase amount exceeding NPR 1 million warrants an
open bid or tender published in national newspapers.

Lenses and frames are both coming to Nepal from
China. Some people think that frames come from India. It is because Indian
suppliers can buy the items in bulk, for example commodity worth of 50 million
INR all at once. That way the costing for them in the same item will be very low
when Nepali supplier goes there and buy the commodity with just 5 million NPR.
In terms of volume, Nepali supplier can't compete with the Indian ones. So, the
cost of an item when less volume is bought would be cheaper from the Indian
supplier, who in fact have bought those items from China. Many Indian frame
manufactures are shut down because they could not compete with the China market
in terms of both price and quality.
